Summer Is A Flying By

Hello all.  We are almost two-thirds of the way through summer, schools are about to start and school sports teams have started their fall sports practices here in Texas.

At Tudor Rose Sampler Guild, we have had a little break from our month meetings, taking the month of July off to enjoy the season.

During our June meeting, we had a very educational presentation by Debbie G. on the history of scissors.  Can you believe the oldest pair of scissors date back to 1500 B.C. in Egypt.  These early scissors were, as best archeologists can determine, made of a single piece of metal. They were mechanically two levers joined by a loop which served as a fulcrum.  In about 100 A.D. Roman craftsmen developed cross-blade scissors. That is, the blade-edges crossed and slid past each other when cutting. The looping fulcrum remained. Its amazing how far they have come.  Everyone would agree that scissors are a vital tool to stitching.

Our August meeting will take place on the 4th, when we will have our annual stash/craft sale.  The September 1, 2015 meeting will be very exciting when we welcome Sharon Bell, who will talk to us about Victorian Mourning Samplers.

"Give me the joys of summer,
Of Summer Queen so fair,
With wealth of lovely flowers
And fruits and sun kissed air!

Talk not to me of winter
With ice and frost and snow,
Nor changing spring and autumn
When howling winds will blow.

No, I will take the joys
Of summer every time,
So to this Queen of Seasons
I dedicate my rhyme."
